ABOUT ALBURY & OUR LOCAL AREA
Situated on the NSW-Victorian Border, on the banks of the Murray River, Albury is the major urban centre of the Albury-Wodonga region, servicing a regional population of around 100,000 people. Located between Sydney and Melbourne on Australia's busiest inland transport corridor, Albury is a strategic hub for commerce, retail, transport, health and education. Melbourne is only 3 hours away by car and there is also a rail and air service to the capital cities. Albury offers a range of residential living from centrally located modern townhouse developments and lovely Victorian and Georgian homes to rural living on the city fringe. There are more than 460 hectares of parks and reserves including the lovely Botanic Gardens established in 1877. Spread over 4 hectares, the gardens are an outstanding example of 19th and early 20th century provincial botanic gardens in Australia. Sporting facilities include an aquatic centre, a high class multi-purpose stadium and sporting fields for activities such as hockey, athletics, tennis, netball, cricket and football. Cycling tracks are popular and the Victorian snow fields are only a couple of hours away. There are several excellent and picturesque golf courses. The Albury Art Gallery holds a pre-eminent position as one of the major regional galleries in Australia; there are also a regional Library and Museum. The Hot House Theatre, Regent Cinema Centre and Performing Arts Centre regularly offer a range of top-quality productions. The Murray River is the focus of many outdoor experiences including paddling, riverside nature trails and the Cumberoona Paddlesteamer tours. The Wonga Wetlands offer a unique wetland experience with a diverse range of birdlife and educational facilities. Situated 15 kms to the east is Lake Hume, one of the largest dams in the Southern Hemisphere. It offers many recreational activities such as fishing, walking tracks, camp sites, swimming, water skiing and other water sports. Albury is also the hub of a flourishing regional cafe, winery and restaurant industry. The Hume Murray Farmers' Market operates fortnightly showcasing local produce. Albury has a warm temperate climate. Winter days are mild and sunny with a day time temperature of around 13 - 15 degrees Celsius and an overnight temperature of around 2 - 6 degrees Celsius. The local area offers a range of educational facilities including numerous pre-schools, Government and Private schools (Kindergarten to Year 12), two Universities (Charles Sturt and Latrobe) and two TAFE Colleges plus a Continuing Education Centre. |
